Shazam! Fury of the Gods Review

                                                   MovieSummary

Zackary Levi returns to take on the mantle of Shazam! in this long awaited DC sequel.  Joining him are his foster brothers and sisters who also gained their own sets of powers at the end of the last film.  They are working on their relationship and figuring out how to operate as a team as a new threat stemming from a mistake in their past enters their world.

MPA Rating/Content

This film is rated PG-13 for sequences of action and violence, and language.  No major content warnings for this one other than an almost "F" bomb by the youngest of the group. I don't recall a use of an actual one in the film as PG-13 movies are allowed 1 before it becomes rated R.  There are some minor references to one of the teens sexuality and coming out as gay.

 My Rating: 6.5/10

Overall I enjoyed Shazam! Fury of the Gods.  I don't think it lives up to the first one, but it is still worth seeing if you want to finish out this version of the DCEU.  If you don't know already it is being rebooted soon by James Gunn.  That being said it is hard to care about these characters and the future as we don't know that any of them will still exist.  That really hurts this movie.

Some other things I felt were strange was that the lead child actor is almost 18, yet when he is in adult form the adult version acts more childish than the 17 year old.  Some good comedy in this and most of the jokes land well.  The special effects are great and one of the characters abilities will remind you of Inception and Dr. Strange.  These would have been cool to see in 3D if you have the option, I don't know for sure that it was made for 3D or not.

I highly recommend watching the first movie again if you haven't seen it recently.  I forgot many things and I think it would have helped.  The movie does a mini recap, but not enough I don't think.  There is also a major cameo in this that the trailer ruins.  The cameo is in the last 10 minutes of the movie as well.  Avoid the trailers if you can.

The villains weren't the strongest in this and again it was just hard to care about them as it felt like their fate was already decided.

Have you seen it?  Do you plan to see it?  What are your thoughts?
