Pacific Rim: Uprising Review

   Movie Summary

Set more than a decade after the events of the first Pacific Rim we find ourselves meeting a new generation of Jaeger pilots and cadets.  The main story follows the son of Idris Elba's character from the first film as he goes from rebel to hero.  A new threat emerges, and they must adapt to this shocking turn of events.

MPAA Rating/Content

Pacific Rim: Uprising is rated PG-13 for sequences of Sci-Fi violence and action, and some language.  Not much else to say here on content.  It's about what you come to expect from these types of movies.

"It takes many tropes from other films and just doesn't add much originality to what is a cool premise."

   My Rating: 4/10

I was pretty let down on this one.  I wouldn't say the first film was great either, but it had more of that dumb fun that is enjoyable in a theater setting.  This one just lacked the spirit that the first movie had.  It continues the story of some of the characters from the original, but for the most part it just hindered the film rather than "pass the torch" to a new generation.

The "twist" with the villain I thought was poorly executed and just wasn't handled well.  John Boyega does an okay job as this character, but he isn't given much to work with.  The dialogue is sub par, and not even in a cheesy way.  It's a little cringe worthy and statements of the obvious are made frequently.  It takes many tropes from other films and just doesn't add much originality to what is a cool premise.

Visually I thought it matched and at parts may have even surpassed the original which it should do being that it is several years later.
