Hostiles Review

   Movie Summary

Hostiles takes place in the year 1892.  The Civil War has passed, and most conflict with Native Americans has subsided.  Many are still held prisoner from skirmishes that took place many years prior.  A dying former war chief would like to be laid to rest in his former homeland, and a reluctant Army Captain is ordered to escort him, and his family home.

MPAA Rating/Content

This film is rated R for strong violence, and language.  In addition to these there are some pretty dark and depressing themes throughout.  This is not a cheer you up kind of movie.  It's contents can be hard to watch at times, but it is all done to show the harsh reality of this time.

   My Rating: 9/10

*What I Liked

The scenery they chose to shoot in this is stunning.  There are plenty of your classic Western wide shots that give you the full picture and scope.  It enables you to feel like you are alone with these characters in the wild landscape of the west.

This film take you on several emotional journeys as it deals with losing loved ones and realizing your mortality.  It is also a story of revelation and redemption between the two different cultures.  Mutual respect is found and the journey to get there is very inspiring.

Rosamund Pike delivers a great performance as a very troubled mother who deals with a huge tragedy.  Her journey of dealing with this pain, and overcoming it is a key part of the story.  Christian Bale is also much different in this than I have seen him before.  He is soft spoken for the most part, and he is able to show us what the toils of war do to a man.  He is very tired and at the end of his career.

*What I didn't Like

It was a bit long.  I thought it could have ended a couple different times before it reached the actual conclusion.  A few parts seemed to be a little drawn out, and it took a while to get to the next objective.
