The Dark Tower Review

Movie Introduction

The Dark Tower film is considered a sort of sequel to the 8th book in the franchise written by Stephen King.  This is a rather unusual approach to create a whole new story rather than to adapt what you already have, but they gave it a go.  It is hard to guarantee an 8 film series unless you're a household name like Harry Potter so it looks like they decided to play it safe on this one.

MPAA Rating/Content

Dark Tower is rated PG-13 for thematic material including sequences of gun violence and action.  No sexual content or language really to worry about on this one.  Just violence will be the only concern to watch out for.  There is a fairly intense sequence towards the end where the body count gets pretty high.  No blood and gore just people getting shot at.

My Rating: 6.5/10

Had a hard time rating this one.  There were definitely parts I really liked, but the movie didn't quite seem to give me more of what I wanted to see.  There is all this mythology with multiple worlds, gunslingers, and this man in black that you just don't get enough information about.  This film is only 90 minutes so they really had to cram as much in as possible. I would have liked to learn more about the backstories of some of these characters.  You could really tell that you were missing quite a bit of information and significance of what was going on.

Not being a book reader myself I'm sure the experience will be drastically different for someone who has.  Being a continuation of the books, someone who has read them would already have the knowledge about the prior events.   It is a interesting concept and I think the casting was great for pretty much everyone all around.  Just would have liked to have known more without having to read the books prior.
