The Mummy (2017) Review

Movie Introduction

Universal's shared monster universe called the "Dark Universe" kicks off with this summer's reboot of the Mummy.  Every studio seems to want their own shared film universe so this is their attempt at starting off something great.  It may be a little forward to say right off the bat that they are planning on connecting all of these films without seeing how the first film in the series is received, but it does show confidence.

MPAA Rating/Content

The Mummy is rated PG-13 for violence, action and scary images, and for some suggestive content and partial nudity.  This film certainly does have some images that may be frightening to some viewers and caution should be had there if you or someone you know is sensitive to that material.  It isn't a straight up horror film, but does have some horror elements including some jump scares and intense moments.  There is also a brief scene of rear female nudity to be aware of, and at least one sexual reference made in the film.  If you have a major phobia against spiders and rats you may also feel a little uncomfortable a couple times in the film.

My Rating: 6.5/10

I thought this film was enjoyable.  It introduces you very well to what this shared universe is going to look like and gives you hints and Easter eggs of what is to come.  It will be interesting to see how it does this weekend when Wonder Woman is only entering it's second week so competition will still be strong.  If this film makes enough to warrant the production of the future films in the "Dark Universe"  I think it could really be something to keep an eye on.  My main criticism with this film was the ending.  I won't spoil anything, but I thought that the way they chose it to end came off a little cheesy.  I also thought they could have done more to promote the next film they were doing in the series, but it ends as if there is only a possibility of maybe a Mummy sequel.  Also there is no mid or post credit scene and I think that may have been a missed opportunity.
